Adjunct Professor, Université de Montréal

Biography

Botanist and researcher, he works at the reasearch and development division at the Montreal Botanical Garden since 2010 and is adjunct professor at the biology department of the Université de Montréal. He obtained his Ph.D. in biology from the University of Montreal in 2006 and then did postdocs at the Allan Wilson Centre in New Zealand (2006-2008) and at the Biology department of McGill University (2008-2010).

He received many prices, for instance the Governor General's Academic Gold Medal for his Ph.D. thesis (2006) and the Lionnel Cinq Mars (2002) and A.E. Porsild (2006) prices from the Canadian Bontanical Association. He published several papers in high impact journals in evolutionary biology (Systematic Biology, The American Naturalist, Molecular Biology and Evolution, Evolution, The Plant Cell) and is academic editor for the PLoS ONE journal.

Research Interests

Simon is a plant biologist. His Ph.D. was in systematics where he developped and expertise in phylogenetic analysis. During his studies, he also acquired good knowledge in population genetics and bioinformatics, themes that he further investigared during his postdoctoral studies. He has always had a great interest for theoretical questions and his work is generally characterized by a combination of theoretical and empirical approaches. He is most interested in the evolution of plant mating systems, but he is also interested in question related to conservation and biodiversity. A description of his research can be found here.
